Is my gas range instrument accurate in my car?

I just bought my first car since 1994 (Scion xB 2008). The owners manual says it has a 14 gal tank. I let my gas range finder get down to 1 mile left. When I filled the tank, it only held 12 gals. Are any of these accurate or is it just for fun?
