Greek Hell compared with Christian Hell Question?
Hades, the Greek underworld, is nothing like the Christian Hell. It was originally just a field of asphodels (the favorite food of the dead) under the earth, where souls led a very neutral existence, a sort of dreary counterfeit of real life. The dead drank from the Lethe and forgot their previous existence, becoming only mindless shadows of their former selves. Only later did Hades have Tartarus, a place of punishment for people who had really pissed off the gods (like Tantalus or Sisyphus), and the Elysian Fields, a fantastic place of rest for Greek heroes and those who had died in battle.
