Are there currently any new treatments to prevent brain herniation that involve freezing the brain.?

Hypothermia has been used post severe cardiac episode. How soon should a crainectomy be done once cat-scan confirms life threatening ault to the brain, is 2 hours too long? What else can be done to avoid a life altering or fatal outcome?
